Designing for the Future
Creating a Digital Driver’s License for New York State
Identifying the Problem
Printed licenses are susceptible to damage, loss, and fraud. The limited typographic hierarchy and physical space make it hard to quickly read and scan.
Crafting the Solution
Digital Licenses are more secure, efficient, and easier to read than the standard printed license. The digital platform allows for easy accessibility and readability on a smartphone, and convenience as a backup form of identification.
Switch Your ID
Having two separate license views protects users from giving out their personal information when it is not required. This provides a level of privacy and security for those going out for a drink or age-restricted events. The ID view can be switched in the app’s menu.
Share Your ID
Sharing your ID helps to prevent complications with law enforcement, such as unlawful search and seizure of a personal device. Through the sharing feature, users can share their ID with law enforcement or future employer through the app with a scanned code, or through email and text.
